Can Public-Private Partnerships Help Stop AIDS in Africa? Lessons from Botswana

Center for Global Development and Merck & Co., Inc co-hosted Can Public-Private Partnerships Help Stop AIDS in Africa? Lessons from Botswana on June 6, 2007. An innovative model for fighting HIV/AIDS in Africa is being piloted in Botswana through a public-private partnership involving the Government of Botswana, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and Merck & Co., Inc. The partnership is intended to help Botswana achieve an "AIDS-Free Generation by 2016" by expanding prevention, supporting treatment, increasing counseling and testing, and empowering communities.
The event featured Dr. Themba Moeti, Managing Director of African Comprehensive HIV/AIDS Partnerships. Discussants included David Greeley, Senior Director, HIV/AIDS Programs, Merck & Co., Inc. and Board Member, African Comprehensive HIV/AIDS Partnerships, April Harding, Visiting Fellow, Center for Global Development and Mead Over, Senior Fellow, Center for Global Development. The event was moderated by Nandini Oomman, Director, HIV/AIDS Monitor, Center for Global Development.
